The book
of Deuteronomy is largely a recounting of the commandments and their historical background.
Some of the commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai were recorded in the book
of Leviticus, others in the book of Numbers, each book recording only those commandments related to its theme. The
bulk of the commandments, however, were recorded in the book of Deuteronomy
and were taught again by Joshua on Mount Ebal, after Israel crossed the Jordan. (Deut 27)
Introductory Speech: Deuteronomy chapters 1-4
Before his death, Moses gathered the people one
last time to hear the commandments.
The opening verses introduced Moses' main speech. "These are the words which Moses spoke to
Israel." "Words" refer
to the commandments that Moses will teach later on in the main speech. These
"words" had already been taught at Mount Sinai, forty years earlier, and were now given to
the new generation, as they were about to enter the land. Had the sin of the spies not taken place,
the eleven day journey from Mount Sinai would have been their final journey and preparation before
conquering the land.
"In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh
month, Moses spoke (taught) these commandments." (Deut
1:3-4)
"And this is The Torah
that Moses taught before Israel." (Deut
4:44)
The word "Torah" in this verse referees to the commandments
which were to follow in the main speech.
The Main Speech: Deuteronomy
chapters 5-26
The main speech divides into two distinct sections: "The
Commandment" section focuses on the proper attitude toward YHVH. (Chapters 6-11)
The "Statutes and Judgments" section focuses on proper attitude between man and his
'neighbor'. (Chapters 12-26)
YHVH told Moses: "Go tell the people to return to their tents, but you remain here with Me
and I will give you the commandment and the statutes
and the judgments which you shall teach them." (Deut 5:27-28)
"This is the commandment (singular) and the statutes
and the judgments that YHVH has commanded me to teach you to observe in the
land." (Deut 6:1)
The division
of the speech into two sections is clearly marked, followed by a lengthy list of commandments for
Israel to keep in the land.
"These are the statutes and judgments that you are to keep
in the land which YHVH gave to your forefathers."
(Deut 12:1)
"YHVH commands you today to keep
these statutes and judgments with all your heart." (Deut 26:16) "Hear O Israel, YHVH is our Elohim, and you shall love your Elohim
with all your heart and all your soul... and these instructions which I command you today, teach them to your children." (Deut 6:4-6)
"If, then, you faithfully keep this commandment that I command you, to Love YHVH... and
to follow His laws and to attach yourselves to Him."
(Deut 11:22)
"Listen, Israel, to the statutes and judgments
which I am teaching you today, learn them and keep them." (Deut 5:1)
Moses reviewed how and when the commandments
were first given, reminding Israel of their covenantal obligation, since most of the people were not present
at that time.
"YHVH made a covenant with us at Horeb. Not only
with our forefathers did YHVH make this covenant, but also with us, we the living, who
are here today." (Deut 5:2-3)
Moses recalled how the first (ten) commandments
were heard directly from YHVH, then reviewed the remaining commandments that were given
after them.
"When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the
mountain was ablaze with fire, you came up to me... and said... Let us not die, for this fearsome fire will consume us...
you go closer and hear all that YHVH says, and then you tell us everything that YHVH commands,
and we will willingly do it." (Deut 5:20-26)
Had Israel not become fearful, they themselves would
have heard the rest of the commandments directly from YHVH, immediately after the first Ten Commandments.
Section 1: The Commandment The
Eleventh Commandment: "Love YHVH and these laws"
The first commandment in this special unit
is the 'Shema'.
"Shema
Israel, hear O Israel: YHVH our Elohim, YHVH is One, and you shall love YHVH...
and these laws which I command you, and these words shall be in your heart." (Deut 6:4-7)
"If, then, you faithfully keep This Commandment, to Love YHVH
and to follow His laws... then YHVH will help you conquer these nations.
Every footstep that you take will become your land, to its widest borders. No man shall stand up against
you." (Deut 11:22-25)
The 'Shema' was
the first of a lengthy list of commandments that were to be constantly repeated and taught.
"These words that I am teaching you today must be kept
in your heart - and you must repeat them (over and over) to your children and speak about them constantly,
when at home, and when you travel, when you get up in the morning, and when you go to sleep." (Deut 6:5-8)
"When the king is seated on his royal throne, he must write a
copy of this law in a book... and it must be with him and he must read from it every day of his life in order
that he learns to fear YHVH."
(Deut 17:18-19)
Section 2: The Statutes And Judgments
"Now that you are crossing the Jordan to inherit the Land...
keep these statutes and judgments that I am teaching you today." (Deut 11:31-32)
"These are the statutes and judgments that you are to keep
in the land which YHVH gave to your forefathers." (Deut 12:1)
Laws concerning when and where to build the permanent Temple, (chapter
12), dietary laws, (chapter 14) laws of the festivals and holidays, (chapter 16) laws about appointing judges and political
leaders, (chapter 17) and civil laws. (chapters 19 -25)
Which commandment is greater? The "Commandment" to
love YHVH with all our hear or the Statutes and Judgments.
"One of the scribes asked Him: which is the first commandment of
all? And Yashua answered him: The first of all the commandments is 'Hear, O Israel, YHVH your Elohim, YHVH is
One'... And the second is like it... to love your neighbor as yourself." (Mark 12:28-31)
The answer is clear. To love YHVH
is to keep His Commandments - yesterday, today and forever!
"This day, YHVH commands you to keep these statutes
and judgments, and you should keep them with all your
heart and all your soul." (Deut 26:16)
The connection
between loving YHVH and keeping His Commandments is made clear in Yashua's own words:
"If you love me
you'll keep my commandments." (John 14:15)
