"You
shall not cause any leavening or any honey to go up as an offering to YHVH... You shall salt your every meal offering... On
your every offering you shall offer salt." Leviticus 2:11-13
Leavening and honey enhance food by adding to its
taste. Salt is different. Salt brings out the taste of the food itself. What is the important lesson here? In fact,
why is this lesson so important that even Yashua our Savior found it necessary to deliver one of His most lengthy teachings,
seventeen verses, on this matter, for all of His followers in all ages?
YHVH "lights up" every person at his or her
birth with His Light, giving us the necessary "tools" for life. These tools include the special talents within us which enable
us to serve Him and those He places in our lives. John 1:9 reminds us of this. We must learn to use these abilities and to
be content with them. He has entrusted us with our particular gifts and talents. We must not focus on what we don't have or
what others were given, comparing our gifts to theirs. Rather, we must learn to better use the unique qualities, talents,
and abilities we have been so graciously given. This is our obligation and our duty to our Maker who made us just the way
He wanted us to be.
Although these talents may be dormant, it is our responsibility to salt them and bring out their full flavor. This is how we maximize our potential, how we present ourselves as
a living sacrifice, how we do our best for Him and His Kingdom. Matthew 5:13 is our reminder to be that salt of the earth.
Another strong and very "salty" word of teaching, Matthew 25:14-30, gives a word of praise to the "faithful servants," those
who use their given talents to benefit His Kingdom, but issues a warning to the slothful and fearful servants. Yashua even
called them "wicked" because they failed to use their talents, choosing rather to hide them in the earth. They thus rendered
themselves unprofitable and useless to Him and to the "earth" -- the unsaved. Their unexpected, unnecessarily painful ending
was certainly not YHVH's will for them. He was their Savior, and it was His duty to warn them that they might be saved from
such a terrible death.
"If we only knew then what we know now," we often say. But we can know now, and we must know
now. It is clearly written for us in II Timothy 3:16-17. Hosea 4:6 declares that we do not have to perish for lack of
knowledge. In Him there is no lack at all. His Grace is more than sufficient. In Him we can be all He has made us to be.
Let
us go to the Rock of our Salvation and drink the living waters that flow so freely. Let us make certain that our priorities
are also His priorities, and let us strive to do all we can do and be all we can be!
His grace is sufficient for you and for me.
His love is so sweet, so rich and free.
When you draw closer, as
close as can be,
The salt in His tears you'll be able to see.
